What determines a copper scrap grade?
Copper scrap is usually bought according to composition, cleanliness, form, and the work required to recover usable metal. Clean, unalloyed, uncoated copper is different from tinned wire, soldered tube, insulated cable, motors, radiators, or copper-bearing assemblies even when every item contains copper.
The safest working rule is to separate material by what you can actually observe, keep uncertain pieces out of the clean pile, and ask the receiving yard to apply its own current specification. Industry specification names help buyers and sellers communicate, but an individual yard controls the grade it will purchase and the preparation it requires.
Common copper groups to keep separate
Bare bright wire is clean, bare, uncoated, unalloyed copper wire that meets a buyer's size and condition rules. Clean copper tubing and solids may fit a No. 1-style category when they are free of solder, paint, plating, and attachments. Oxidized, coated, soldered, or otherwise less-clean copper may be bought under a No. 2-style or another yard-specific grade.
Insulated wire is normally evaluated as a recovery material rather than as solid copper. Motors, transformers, radiators, sealed units, and mixed assemblies have their own categories because labor, insulation, steel, fluids, and other materials affect recovery. Never relabel a mixed item as clean copper simply because copper is visible.
- Look for paint, tinning, solder, brass fittings, steel fasteners, insulation, oil, or sealed components.
- Use a magnet only to find some ferrous attachments; it cannot prove copper purity or grade.
- Keep unknown alloy pieces separate from red-colored unalloyed copper.
Example copper value calculation
Suppose a sorted load contains 14 pounds of Grade A copper and 9 pounds of Grade B copper. If a yard quotes A dollars per pound for the first grade and B dollars per pound for the second, the planning estimate is (14 × A) + (9 × B). This example uses variables because a real quote depends on the yard, time, location, condition, and final classification.

Preparation choices and common mistakes
Removing a brass fitting or steel bracket can improve separation when the work is safe, lawful, and worth the time. Aggressive processing is not automatically profitable. Ask how the yard buys the item before stripping cable, cutting tube, or dismantling equipment, and compare the possible grade difference with labor, tool wear, material loss, and safety risk.
Never burn insulation or coatings. Do not open sealed, pressurized, refrigerant-containing, electrical, or hazardous equipment unless you are qualified and the work complies with applicable rules. A lower but correct mixed-material grade is better than an unsafe attempt to create a cleaner pile.
Turn the sorted copper into a useful record
Photograph the separated groups, record their container-adjusted weights, and call the yard using the same descriptions you used in the pile. Ask whether its No. 1, No. 2, bare bright, and insulated-wire definitions match your material and whether the quote has a minimum quantity or preparation condition.
