What bare bright copper usually means
Bare bright generally refers to clean, bare, uncoated, unalloyed copper wire that meets a buyer's thickness and condition requirements. Industry specifications describe a particular wire product; they do not automatically include tubing, bus bar, sheet, chopped fragments, burned wire, or every bright copper-colored item.
Ask the yard about minimum wire size, oxidation, strand construction, length, and whether it separates bare bright from other clean No. 1 copper. Names can be familiar while acceptance details differ, so use the buyer's current definition for your estimate.
What to inspect before calling it bare bright
The wire should be completely free of insulation, enamel, varnish, lacquer, tinning, solder, connectors, steel, and other attachments. Bright copper color supports identification but does not prove the material is unalloyed or acceptable. Very fine strands, weathered wire, and machine windings can be bought differently even after insulation is removed.
Never include copper-clad aluminum or copper-plated steel. A freshly cut end can reveal a silver or different-colored core, but do not cut energized, installed, pressurized, or unknown material. Keep uncertain cable separate and let the buyer identify it.
- Candidate: bare copper wire with consistent copper color through the conductor and no coating or attachments.
- Separate: tinned, enameled, lacquered, burned, oil-soaked, hair wire, or mixed-metal conductor.

Should you strip insulated wire?
Start with two yard quotes: one for the insulated cable as-is and one for the stripped grade the buyer expects it could become. Weigh a representative sample before and after safe mechanical stripping to estimate copper recovery. Then compare the expected difference with labor, tool cost, electricity, discarded insulation handling, and the risk that the stripped material receives another grade.
Do not burn insulation or use unsafe chemical methods. Burning wire can release hazardous pollution, damage the copper, violate rules, and make the load unacceptable. If the cable is difficult to strip or the recovery is low, selling it in the correct insulated-wire category may be the more rational choice.
Example preparation comparison
Suppose 40 pounds of cable would be bought as-is at rate I. A sample indicates only 24 pounds would remain as clean conductor, quoted at rate C. Compare 40 × I with 24 × C, then subtract the real preparation cost from the stripped option. The higher gross rate does not automatically create the higher net result.
Use hypothetical or current quoted rates only; do not substitute a commodity price. Save both scenarios in your notes, then record actual stripped weight and sale grade if you process the cable. That turns a one-time choice into evidence for similar cable later.
Why the final payout can still differ
The receiving facility may apply a different grade after seeing conductor size, coating, contamination, or mixed pieces. Its certified scale can also differ from a home scale, and the quoted rate can expire. Quantity, local demand, processing outlets, and market movement can change the offer.
