Why the stainless grade changes the estimate
Stainless steel describes many iron-based alloys designed for corrosion resistance and other properties. Different families can contain different amounts of chromium, nickel, molybdenum, manganese, and other elements. Buyers may separate common 300-series, 400-series, nickel-bearing, molybdenum-bearing, turnings, and mixed or unknown stainless because their chemistry and remelting outlets differ.
A clean-looking sink, fastener, pipe, appliance panel, valve, and industrial alloy component are not automatically the same grade. The best estimate begins with known product information or a yard's identification, not a visual assumption.
What a magnet can and cannot tell you
Some stainless grades are strongly magnetic, some are weakly magnetic, and some are commonly nonmagnetic in an annealed condition. Fabrication and cold work can also change magnetic response. A magnet is useful for sorting clues and finding ordinary steel attachments, but it does not prove a stainless family or exact grade.
Color and resistance to surface rust are also inconclusive. Plated steel can look like stainless, and stainless can stain or corrode in certain environments. Look for alloy stamps such as a known grade marking, mill documentation, or product records, then let the yard use appropriate testing when chemistry matters.
- Keep marked 304, 316, or other known grades separate from unmarked material.
- Separate complete appliances and mixed assemblies from clean stainless solids.
- Keep stainless turnings dry and ask about oil, moisture, and container rules.
Example stainless estimate
Suppose a buyer confirms 70 pounds in category S1 and 25 pounds of an unknown or lower-value mixed category S2. With current quoted rates R1 and R2, estimate (70 × R1) + (25 × R2). Do not apply a nickel-bearing quote to untested material simply because it is nonmagnetic.

Preparation and contamination
Remove ordinary steel, rubber, plastic, insulation, and other attachments when the buyer confirms that the cleaner product will be bought differently and the work is safe. Ask about prepared dimensions before cutting pipe or sheet. Sharp edges, heavy sections, process residue, and unknown industrial exposure require appropriate handling.
Do not grind stainless merely to create sparks for an online identification chart, and do not use chemical spot tests without training and suitable controls. Incorrect identification can reduce value, contaminate a sorted load, and expose the worker to unnecessary risk.
Why stainless offers differ
Alloy chemistry, quantity, cleanliness, form, local processing demand, freight, and current markets for contained metals can all affect a quote. One yard may have alloy-analysis equipment or a direct outlet that another does not. The final classification and certified scale weight belong to the purchasing facility.
Save alloy markings, source notes, photos, quoted category, and the final ticket. A history of verified results is more useful for future stainless loads than a universal online price that ignores grade and location.
