Why a Scrap Yard Payout Can Differ From Your Estimate
Review the common reasons a final scrap payout differs from a planning estimate, including scale weight, grade, contamination, preparation, and quote timing.
The yard's measured weight is different
Home scales, container estimates, and vehicle payload guesses can differ from the receiving scale. Container tare, attachments, moisture, or unit conversion can also change the usable weight.
The material receives another grade
A yard may classify material differently because of alloy, insulation, solder, paint, steel attachments, mixed pieces, dimensions, or the processing needed before resale. Grade names and specifications vary by buyer.
Preparation or contamination changes the calculation
Non-metal attachments, excessive dirt, liquids, insulation, sealed components, or mixed grades may lead to a lower grade, a weight adjustment, or rejection. Ask the yard what it accepts before spending time preparing a load.
The quote changed or used another unit
Buying prices can change between a phone call and arrival. A per-pound price cannot be applied directly to a kilogram or ton estimate, and the meaning of ton can vary. Record the quote's unit and validity window.
Improve the next estimate
Compare your saved estimate with the final scale ticket. Record the actual grade, net weight, unit price, and payout, then use that history when planning a similar load. A consistent record is more useful than chasing an old generic price list.
