How to Call a Scrap Yard for a Useful Quote

Prepare before you call

Write down the material, your best estimate of its grade, approximate weight, condition, and any attachments or contamination. Photos can help if the yard accepts them, but the buyer may still need to inspect the material in person.

Ask these questions in order

A concise call respects the buyer's time and gives you details that can be compared later.

1. Do you accept this exact material today?
2. What grade name would you expect to use, and what preparation changes that grade?
3. What is the current buying quote, and is it per pound, kilogram, short ton, or another unit?
4. How long is the quote valid, and does it require a minimum quantity?
5. Are there size, contamination, container, or attachment deductions I should know about?
6. What identification, proof of ownership, appointment, or payment rules apply?

Repeat the quote back

Confirm the material name, grade, price unit, and quote period in one sentence. Record the yard, date, time, and person or department you spoke with. Treat the quote as planning information until the yard weighs and grades the load.

Compare like with like

Two quotes are not comparable if they use different grades, units, preparation standards, or deductions. Convert units carefully and ask follow-up questions before choosing a destination based on price alone.
