How to Make Interactive Stories a Shared Family Routine

Choose the moment, not a perfect schedule

Shared story time can happen before bed, during a quiet break, while traveling, or whenever your family has a few unhurried minutes. Start with a time that already works instead of turning it into another obligation.

Use a four-part routine

A small amount of repetition makes it easy for everyone to know what comes next while leaving the story itself open to surprise.

1. Choose a character or door together.
2. Decide who will read, listen, or handle choices this time.
3. Pause at one interesting moment to invite a prediction or idea.
4. At the end, name one image, character, sound, or choice each person remembers.

Let participation look different

One child may want to make every choice, another may prefer listening, and another may want to describe the pictures. These are all valid ways to share the experience. Keep invitations optional and follow the child's interest.

Stop while it still feels enjoyable
