15 Read-Aloud Prompts for an Interactive Story
Use open, playful questions before, during, and after an interactive story—without turning family reading into a quiz.
Before opening the door
Choose one prompt, then leave room for any answer—or no answer at all.
- What do you think might be behind this door?
- Which character would you bring with you?
- What would you pack for this adventure?
- Does this place look noisy, quiet, warm, or chilly?
- What name would you give this world?
During the story
Pause only when the moment feels natural. The goal is shared imagination, not a correct answer.
- What did you notice first?
- What do you think the character wants right now?
- Which choice would you make?
- What sound might we hear in this scene?
- If you could add one thing to the picture, what would it be?
After the story
A short reflection can become its own creative activity, but it is also fine to end with a simple goodnight.
- Which moment would you visit again?
- Who surprised you?
- What might happen after the last page?
- Would you make a different choice next time?
- Can you invent another door for this room?
Keep it playful
Follow-up questions work best as invitations. If a child wants to listen quietly or move on, let the story carry the moment without adding a prompt.
